Dean Bobbie Berkowitz came to Columbia University School of Nursing from the University of Washington, where she was the Alumni Endowed Professor of Nursing, an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health, and served as chair of the Department of Psychosocial and Community Health. Prior to joining the University of Washington, she held leadership positions as deputy secretary in the Washington State Department of Health, and as chief of nursing for the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health.

Berkowitz received her PhD in nursing science from Case Western Reserve University and her MS and BS degrees in nursing from the University of Washington. She is the president of the American Academy of Nursing and a member of the board for both the Public Health Foundation and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Berkowitz is the past chair of the board of trustees of Group Health Cooperative. She is also an author of books on public health nursing leadership, nursing management, and communications in healthcare organizations, and serves on the board for several journals.
